How to make the most of Week 6, without forgetting to rest

What is Consolidation Week?

Consolidation week is a mid-semester break week that you get each semester. This academic year, they are from 13 to 17 October in semester 1, and from 16 to 20 February in semester 2.

Consolidaton week has no classes, and you are expected to do independent and focused study. However, it is not always easy to manage alone, as students need to take a breather but also have many assignments due immediately after this week.

We know how difficult it is to find the right balance between independent study, assignment writing and resting, so we're here to help you!

Tips & Tricks to survive

This week is a great opportunity for you to catch up on class material and get ahead on coursework- but you have limited time! So you might need some study tips.

Check out our short article on how to tackle studying with less stress. The main points to keep in mind are:

  • Keep track of your deadlines: mark them on your calendar and build your schedule around it.
  • Make a to-do list for every day of the week. Be realistic with the goals, and don't beat yourself down if you can't tick everything off the list every day! You can always catch up.
  • Use a Pomodoro technique! If you're not feeling motivated, start with short work intervals of 25 minutes and plenty of short breaks. Before you know, you will get into the right study flow and time will fly.
  • Sleep at least 8-9 hours every night. Use this week to catch up on the sleep you missed during semester. It will refresh your mind and help with focus and energy levels.
  • Take breaks! You can take time for your wellbeing by resting, socialising with friends, or finding an event happening on campus to meet new people.

Also, take advantage of the supports available on campus:

  • Access study skills support via the Skills HubEnglish Gym or Maths Gym
  • Check your Canvas discipline site to find out what School specific support is available. You can get academic support from your lecturers, Academic Advisor or other teaching staff.
  • Connect with your Student Advisor or Personal Tutor for any support beyond your studies.

You can start preparing by planning resources on the Making the most of Consolidation Week page on the Skills Hub.  We recommend you download the Consolidation Week planner.

Lastly, if you know you cannot focus at home/ in your flat, go find a nice spot at the Library or main campus- it is all still open! Click here for a list of the best study spots on Edi campus.
