Food waste recycling in halls

Think before you bin 🥦

We are keen to make sure that our waste is managed efficiently and as sustainably as possible.

If you are living in Edinburgh campus halls, your kitchen is equipped with a small food caddy for food waste recycling as well as your general and recycling bins.

Let's be honest, no one wants to come home after a long day of lectures to the smell of gone-off food! It's easy to make a difference and to stop your kitchen from smelling.

What can I put in the food waste bin?

✅ Bread, rice, pasta and grains

✅ Dairy, meat and fish

✅ Fruit and veg peelings (including egg shells)

✅ Cooked leftovers

✅ Tea bags and coffee grounds

❌ No packaging at all, including paper or 'compostable' packaging

Here's your full guide on how to dispose of waste in halls.

Why is it important?

It's important to put your food waste in the designated bins because of where it ends up afterwards. When food waste goes in general bins, it ends up in the landfill and eventually leads to the emission of greenhouse gases. However, when it's put in the food waste bin, it can be properly disposed of to produce renewable energy and compost.

So you might think those leftover pot noodles are just a bit of waste, but they actually go on to be used for something useful.

The smallest amount of packaging in the food waste bin - even a sticker on a banana - could contaminate it, so please make sure to get rid of your waste properly.

After your next meal, remember to think before you bin and help keep a comfortable and sustainable environment for everyone in halls!
