Holi is a vibrant Hindu "festival of colours", love, and spring, celebrated every year in March to mark the triumph of good over evil and the end of winter.
What do the colours signify?
The colours symbolise the vibrant colours of spring, new beginnings, and the renewal of relationships. Specific colours hold meaning:
- Red: Love and fertility
- Blue: Represents Krishna
- Green: New life
How is it celebrated?
Traditionally, celebrations begin with Holika Dahan bonfires, followed by Rangwali Holi, a happy day of playing with coloured powders (gulal), water guns, music and sharing traditional sweets like gujiya.
How can I join in?
Heriot-Watt hosts a colour run to celebrate Holi. On 4th March, a non-competitive, untimed, high-energy 5km walk or run takes place, where participants are showered with bright coloured powder at various stations throughout the course.
