Essentials for cold weather

Posted 1 day ago

Everything you need to stay warm and cosy this winter

Autumn has begun, and the cold weather is quickly approaching. It's time to put the shorts away and grab the fluffy socks and cosy blankets!

Between lectures and studying, you need your halls to feel as comfortable as possible, especially during the colder weather. Here's a list of all the essentials you need this season.

Layers 🧥

The only way you can stay truly warm around campus is with layers! From walking to lectures, grabbing a morning coffee and beginning your daily studying habits, you might begin to warm up or feel chilly throughout the day.

  • Base Layers: Wear long-sleeve tops underneath T-shirts so you can remove and add layers depending on your body temperature.
  • Mid Layers: Add a hoodie/jumper/sweater over your regular clothes to keep you warm and toasty throughout the day.
  • Waterproof & Windproof Coat: The good old Scottish weather might give you a shock in winter. It can become quite rainy and windy as the months progress, so investing in a good, thick waterproof coat will be in your favour!
  • Accessories: To really feel the Autumnal/Winter vibes, find a warm scarf (big blanket scarves will save your life on chilly nights in the beer garden), a pair of gloves and a beanie.

Footwear 🥾

Whilst Scotland is a beautiful place when the leaves turn orange, and a thin layer of snow rests on the roads, it's rainy days can make paths a bit slippery and walking routes muddy.

  • Waterproof Boots: Choose durable shoes or boots with good grip to handle wet pavements, mud or icy walks to/on campus.
  • Thick Socks: Pack some thick socks to keep your feet warm in lecture halls, and switch to the fluffy ones when you get back home.

Rooms & Study Essentials 🛏️

For maximum warmth when you're in your accommodation and ready to study, make sure you have these essentials.

  • Soft Throws and Blankets: Layer an extra blanket or fleece over your bed or wrap it around you when studying. You may look like Palpatine from Star Wars when you do this, but trust us, it's very cosy.
  • Hot Water Bottle: A classic hot water bottle or a microwaveable heat pack goes a long way when keeping warm and saves on heating costs whilst you work at your desk.
  • Thermos Flask: Carry a reusable flask for hot coffee or tea to sip on the go!

Making sure you're keeping warm throughout the colder seasons is for comfort, but it's also for your health. Having a space to come back to where you can relax and warm up will be great for your mental health, and keeping warm will help to prevent you from catching colds, so it's a great all-rounder!
