Free things to do in Galashiels

Posted 6 days ago

Get out of your room and have some free fun!

Galashiels is one of the most popular towns in the Scottish Borders, with a picturesque backdrop and it's history in the textile industry – perfect for our Scottish Borders campus. If you want to explore the beautiful area without breaking the bank, here are some great free activities for you to enjoy.

Visit Old Gala House

This building has over 400 years of history, and was once home to the Lairds of Galashiels. Now a museum and gallery, you can learn more about the story of the town through interesting exhibitions.

The visit is free, however you can donate some money that goes towards helping keep the museum free if you want to.

Relax in Bank Street Gardens

These gardens in the heart of Galashiels were gifted to the town not long after the Second World War and are stunning in the Spring when the cherry trees blossom. This is a great place for an afternoon picnic.

Walk a section of Sir Walter Scott Way

The Sir Walter Scott Way is a long-distance trail work that usually takes 5-7 days to complete, however a section of this trail goes through Galashiels! You don't have to walk the whole thing, but doing a portion around the town makes for a nice day out when it's dry.

Explore the town's murals

If you just want to get some fresh air, make sure to stop by some of the local murals that are inspired by the area's textile heritage, local people like Sir Walter Scott and general town life. These include:

  • The Flying Scotsman
  • Weave the Magic
  • Braw Lads' Gathering
  • Sir Walter Scott
  • The Shepherd's Plaid
  • Mechanical Flow

Attend a free event

Keep an eye out for free events hosted in your accommodation, on campus and in the area happening throughout the year. We have a range of events happening, both in and outside halls, so make sure to check them out and book your spot!
