Just a short distance from Edinburgh campus lies one of the city's most iconic landmarks, Arthur’s Seat. This ancient volcano is the highest point in Holyrood Park, offering stunning views of Edinburgh, the surrounding hills, and even the sea on clear days.

How to get there

Edinburgh Campus - get the 35 bus from campus and get off at the Holyrood/ Scottish Paraliament stop. Download the campus map to see where the bus stop is located. 

What you need to know before you go

To ensure a safe and enjoyable hike, here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

Take water and snacks: Pack plenty of water and a few snacks to keep your energy up on the way.

Wear suitable footwear: The terrain on Arthur’s Seat can be rocky and uneven, so make sure to wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. 

Pack a coat in the colder months: Even if it’s sunny when you start, temperatures can drop quickly as you climb so take a coat or jacket to stay warm at the top.

Beat the crowds: If you want to enjoy some peace and quiet while hiking, aim to go early in the morning. Just make sure to head out when there’s good daylight to safely navigate the path.

Do your research on the best route: Arthur’s Seat has several routes to the top, some steeper and more challenging than others.  The main routes include paths from the Queen’s Drive.

Weather considerations: Edinburgh weather can be unpredictable, so check the forecast before you head out. 

Bring a camera: Arthur’s Seat offers some of the best views in Edinburgh, so don’t forget to capture the moment!
