Brush up on your Scots lingo

Posted 2 years ago

This might be the first time you hear many of these words!

During your time in Scotland, it's likely you'll pick up on a few words that might not make a whole lot of sense the first time you hear them!

'Scots' is one of three native languages spoken in Scotland and although not everybody speaks it, why not brush up on your Scots vocab by revealing the English translation below (take a guess first!)

Small

"Look at the wee dog"

Sandwiches

"We need some pieces for the picnic"

Stroke

"Clap the dog"

Yes

"Do you want fries with that? Aye"

Pretty

"That's a bonnie dress"

Groceries

"I'm going to pick up some messages"

Knock

"Chap on the door"

Cheeky

"You gallus devil!"

Dreary (weather)

"The weather is little dreich today"

Fun fact: The tale of 'The Gruffalo' has its own version all translated into the Scots language!
