Keeping connections after you leave

Staying in touch with each other ❤️

After spending many hours studying, socialising and bonding together, it can be a big jump moving home and not seeing your uni friends every day. But that doesn't mean that you can't maintain a friendship with them.

Here are a few ways you can stay in touch with each other:

Small connections 🫶

Recognising that some people might not have time for a 2-hour phone call every other night is important, and there are smaller, lower-pressure ways you can keep in contact with them:

  • Voice notes: Send quick updates to each other whilst you're getting ready in the morning or walking to the shops.
  • Share content: Send TikToks to each other. This can be a great way to stay in contact, especially when you're both missing uni and each other. Making each other laugh will be important in those moments.
  • Share playlists: Spotify now has the 'blend' feature, where you can combine your music with a friend so you can see what the other is listening to at the moment.

Make new traditions 🎮

If there's a large amount of travel to see each other, you could try to make digital traditions instead.

  • Gaming nights: Start a Discord together and play your favourite games, or even try some new ones and have a laugh together.
  • Virtual cooking: Cook your favourite meals or comfort foods together over FaceTime and have a catch-up together. You could even play the same playlist together in the background and have a little dance party.
  • Movies/TV shows: This is great if you used to live with each other and wind down to the same shows. You could stream the same shows one night a week together or set up a movie night with some snacks.

Decorate! 🖼️

We know it's not the same as seeing them every day, but printing out pictures of you and your mates and your favourite uni memories can actually make you feel closer to them. Get some fairy lights and make it look aesthetic! If you have family or hometown friends over, you can show them off and tell all the funny stories of your uni friends!

It's important to remember that not everyone will be great at staying in touch, and that's nothing personal. You might be going back to a full-time job, spending more time with family, or deciding to travel. So don't worry too much if they aren't replying straight away - little gestures like these can help you feel more connected.
