How to pay your accommodation fees

Posted 1 day ago

Everything you need to know

All students need to pay a four-week advance rent payment within 48 hours of accepting their accommodation offer to secure their accommodation. You must accept your offer of accommodation online before making the advance rent payment.

Please log in to the accommodation portal in order to do so. If you are having trouble paying online, please get in touch with the Halls Team. If we don't receive your advance rent payment within 48 hours of you accepting your offer, then your offer will be invalid and may be cancelled.

Please note that by accepting accommodation, you are agreeing to pay the required rent either in full or in instalments as detailed in the contract. Not paying rent is a breach of the terms and conditions.

Once you have enrolled, you can download the MyHWU app. Here you can find guidance about your student finance account and log enquiries via the AskHWU tile.

Payment Options

Once you have arrived and are fully enrolled, you can pay any outstanding balance of your accommodation fees either in full or by monthly instalments (recurring card) in the same way that tuition is paid.

Please note that only your Advance Rent Payment is payable through the accommodation portal. Further payments are made through the online payment service or via MyHWU.

Semester One only

15 Week contract - Students staying in accommodation for semester 1 only are required to pay in full.

Paying in full

Please sign in to our online payments service or via the MyHWU app if you wish to settle your outstanding balance after your arrival on campus.

Paying by monthly instalments (recurring card)

  • Exchange and Go Global - Semester 2 (22 weeks): Feb-May
  • Undergraduates (40 weeks): Oct-May
  • Postgraduates (50 weeks): Oct Jul
  • Postgraduates Jan Arrival (32 weeks): Feb-Jul

Instalment amount

The instalment value is the total accommodation amount minus your advance rent payment, divided by the remaining number of instalments. You can set up your recurring card plans via the MyHWU app.

For more information about how to pay your accommodation and instalments, please visit our online payments pages.

Parent/other third-party payer

If you have a parent/other third-party payer who wishes to pay by recurring card on your behalf, this requires your specific permission by yourself for them to see and pay your account.

  • To add a parent or third-party payer, enter their email address and create a password that meets University guidelines. You must also select what type of transactions you want the payer to see, which include tuition and accommodation. Once you have entered this, select the Add button.
  • They will then appear under the Current Authorised Parent/Third Party Accounts.
  • The system will then send access details to the parent/third party by email. They will be able to log into the online payment systems through the parent/ third party option, using your HWU Person ID, their own email address and password.
  • You can log in and change the access at any time for that parent/third party, as well as being able to reset the password by selecting the remove button.

If you are a RUK student

If you are a RUK (English, Welsh or Northern Irish) student, you qualify for a credit to the value of 17 weeks of free accommodation at the traditional en-suite rooms rate (Edinburgh campus) or a contemporary standard room rate (Scottish Borders campus). This credit will be applied regardless of the room type you accept. This amount will be deducted from your total rent invoices once you have arrived on campus and you do not need to do anything to receive this.

If you are having any issues, please contact Accounts Receivable, or if you are having technical difficulties, please make a report on Unidesk.
