Isaure's tips on how to make friends at uni

From joining societies to just being brave

Making friends at university can be daunting, but it is so worth it. Everyone in your accommodation or on your course will be in the same boat as you, so don't hesitate to put yourself out there and meet new people.

Here's Isaure's advice on the best ways to make friends as a student who has been there and done it...

1. Live on campus

By living on campus, everyone you bump into will be studying at Heriot Watt – there's already one thing in common. Also, if you're living in a shared flat or sharing common spaces, you're bound to spark up a conversation.

2. Join societies

Have a hobby or want to start a new one? We have a huge variety of societies available to join, and this is the perfect opportunity to meet like-minded people or bond over a shared interest.

Find out how to join a society, or make your own!

3. Attend events

The ResLife team and Student Union host so many events throughout the year. Think free food, book club, day trips, crafts and more. You're sure to find an event that suits you, and be joined by fellow students on your campus and in your accommodation.

4. Sit next to new people in lectures

Instead of sitting next to the same person in all of your lectures, get out of your comfort zone and actively look for open seats next to people you haven't had the chance to talk to yet. You might have some group work to do during class, making this a great chance to break the ice.

So what are you waiting for? Get out of your room and start socialising, you never know, you might just meet your new best friend!
