Staying safe during the darker nights

What to do, who to call, and when to use SafeZone

As the nights draw in, it’s completely normal to be heading home after dark, whether you’ve been studying late, finishing a shift, or catching up with friends in town. Your safety and peace of mind matter, so here are a few simple ways to make sure you feel confident walking home.

Plan your journey

Before you head out, think about how you’ll get back. If you can, walk with a friend or housemate, even if it’s just part of the way. If you’re walking alone, let someone know when you’re leaving and when you expect to arrive.

Use SafeZone

SafeZone is your direct line to help on campus. If you ever feel unsafe or need assistance, open the app and tap Emergency or First Aid - it connects you straight to the University’s SafeGuarding Team, who can come to your location. You can also use the Check In feature to share your location as you walk, so SafeGuarding can monitor your journey if needed.

It's completely FREE and available on Apple and Android.

Getting home late? Consider a taxi

If it’s late or you’re feeling tired, a licensed taxi or pre-booked ride is a good option.

Use a licensed operator or app; check the plate/driver details before getting in.

  • Share your ride details with a friend and sit in the back
  • Split the fare with friends where you can - safer and often cheaper
  • If a driver or situation doesn’t feel right, don’t get in and move to a well-lit, busy place

Here are some of recommended taxi services:

Trust your instincts

If something doesn’t feel right, listen to that feeling. Head towards a busy, well-lit area or a nearby venue, and call a friend or the SafeGuarding Team through SafeZone. You’re never overreacting by prioritising your safety.

Know when to escalate

If you experience harassment or feel threatened, even if it seems minor, it’s important to report it.

On campus: Use SafeZone or contact the SafeGuarding Team

Off campus: If you’re in immediate danger, call 999. If it’s non-urgent but still concerning, call 101 or report through the University’s Safeguarding Team, who can offer advice and next steps.

Contacting SafeGuarding

Our SafeGuarding teams are here to support you and keep you safe.

Edinburgh Campus

Scottish Borders

If you are ever lost in the city or town centre, whilst they cannot attend to incidents off campus, they can stay on the phone with students for as long as needed, help arrange support in an emergency and provide reassurance upon return to Campus.  When an alert is activated, SafeGuarding Services are immediately notifed and can see the exact location of the person needing help.

If you’ve had an experience that’s left you uneasy, please speak to someone. The Student Wellbeing Team, Res Life, Accommodation Office and Safeguarding are all here to listen, help, and take your concerns seriously.
