What you're responsible for in halls

Everything you need to know

Moving into university is exciting, but sometimes it can be easy to forget there are actual responsibilities you have when arriving, especially if you've moved out for the first time.

We're here to remind you of what you're responsible for in halls so you can prepare yourself before moving in!

Pre-arrival and settling in

Believe it or not, your responsibilities kick off before you've even unloaded the car on arrival day. Before arrival, you'll need to:

✅ Officially accept your accommodation contract

✅ Complete your mandatory online induction

✅ Pay your advance rent payment before picking up your keys

✅ Register with on-campus GP so you can access healthcare immediately

From checking into your accommodation, you'll have a 14-day window to complete and submit your inventory audit.

Keeping your space clean

Your rent does include assisted cleaning of communal areas, but day-to-day cleanliness is entirely down to you and your flatmates. Inside your own bedroom and bathroom, you are fully responsible for:

  • Vacuuming
  • Dusting
  • Wiping down surfaces

In the shared kitchen, you must wash your own dishes, clean down the hobs and countertops after cooking, mop the floors and properly bag up rubbish before taking it to the outdoor bins.

Keeping hallways completely clear of bin bags is vital to prevent fire hazards 🧯

Safety, noise and banned items

To keep everyone safe, the university tests the fire alarms weekly. If the alarm sounds, you must treat it as a real emergency and evacuate the building. It's important never to leave cooking hobs unattended, and never prop open fire doors. Also due to fire risks, specific appliances are banned in halls, including deep-fat fryers, portable heaters, and candles.

Our quiet hours are from 11pm to 7am. It's essential to keep the noise down at all times, and it shows respect to your flatmates, especially during heavy exam periods.

Protecting the property

When you sign your contract, you take full financial responsibility for your room. Any damages, deep-cleaning needs, or missing furniture will be billed directly to you. If anything gets damaged in the communal areas and no one confesses, the repair costs are split equally amongst all flatmates as a joint liability.

Keep your keys and key card safe, too. Duplicating or lending them to others is strictly forbidden. If you lose or break them, you'll be required to pay for a replacement:

  • Keys - £25 each
  • Key card - £20
