It's important for all residents to be aware that Heriot-Watt has a strict smoke-free policy. This prohibits smoking – including vapes, e-cigarettes and any similar devices, equipment or substances – within 5 meters metres of all university buildings and inside them.
Smoking is only permitted at designated outdoor spots where we have stubbing-out bins across campus, away from entrances. There are no designated indoor or enclosed smoking shelters on campus.
UK Law bans smoking in enclosed public spaces and workplaces.
Smoking at your residence
If you are found smoking in or near residences, you will receive a disciplinary fine and will be asked to attend a mandatory Fire Safety workshop. Repeat offences may result in further disciplinary action.
Smoking next a window and blowing the smoke out of the window is still considered smoking indoors, and if we find any maintenance issues caused by smoking indoors – such as yellowing walls in the bathroom or strong cigarette smells – you will receive a cleaning charge.
You should also not cover or tamper with the smoke detector in your room, this can be a major fire safety risk. If you are found doing so, you will receive a larger disciplinary fine.
A summary of the Smoke-Free Policy
So make sure to remember that Heriot-Watt's Smoke-Free Policy means:
- No indoor smoking – it is banned inside all university buildings, including residences.
- The policy covers all forms of smoking, including vaping and electronic devices.
- You can use the designated areas across campus for outside smoking, where there are outdoor bins for cigarette butts.
Help us create a welcoming environment for everyone in halls and on campus by being aware and following university policies.
