3 easy 'clear your fridge' recipes

Posted 1 day ago

Moving out of uni? Don't waste what's in your fridge.

It's that time again when you're moving out and have the dilemma of 'I can't do a food shop because I'll waste food', but then 'I don't have enough food for a proper meal'.

Well, don't worry, we've put together 3 easy recipes for you to use up your leftovers:

1. Fried rice 🍛

One good thing about making fried rice is that you can make it with literally anything. If you've got half a bag of frozen veg, carrots, peppers and leftover soy sauce, then this will be easy for you.

Method

  1. Put a small amount of oil in a pan (if you've run out, you can skip this), and add some garlic and/or ginger.
  2. Chop all the veggies and add to the pan once the garlic and/or ginger have browned.
  3. Cook the rice separately (microwaved or uncooked can be used), and once cooked, add it to the pan with the soy sauce.
  4. If you have any eggs or chicken, you can add them for protein.
  5. Serve in a bowl and bon appetite!

2. Pizza toast 🍕

This meal is great for those who have little bits of tomato pureé, cheese and random leftovers. Have a bit of fun with this one and experiment with different toppings!

Method

  1. Put two pieces of bread in the toaster (or under the grill in the oven, if you don't have a toaster).
  2. Spread the tomato purée on top.
  3. Add the cheese and pop under the grill.
  4. Add your toppings (leftover ham, veggies), or you can leave it with just cheese.
  5. If you have added toppings, sprinkle a bit more cheese on top and place them back under the grill.
  6. Now you can enjoy the cheesy goodness - without chucking away food and ordering a takeaway pizza.

3. Creamy pasta 🍝

Pasta is one food that you'll always find left in the cupboard, so why not turn it into a dish? If you have random cheeses, cream or milk, butter and any meats in the fridge, then try this recipe.

Method

  1. Heat a saucepan with boiling water and cook your pasta.
  2. Whilst the pasta is boiling away, cook any leftover meat - you can mix and match with this if you have different ones.
  3. Once the meat is cooked, add garlic, cream/milk, and melt the cheese in to make a sauce. Put it on a low heat to avoid burning the sauce.
  4. Once the sauce has heated, add your cooked pasta and combine.
  5. Serve in a bowl and enjoy!

Whether you're moving out or trying to save money, cooking should be the easy part - have fun with it and get creative, who knows, you may have a new favourite meal by mixing different leftovers.
