Social spaces at Jean Muir Student Village

Your go to hang out spots at halls!

Each building at Jean Muir has its own communal space on the ground floor – perfect for hanging out, chatting, or just taking a break from your room. You’re not limited to the one in your building either, so feel free to explore them all!

If you’d like to host something special (like a birthday party), just email bordershalls@hw.ac.uk to book a space. Throughout the year, the Accommodation Team, Student Union, Wellbeing, and other services will also run events in these spaces, so keep an eye out.

The Stitch (formerly the Multi-purpose room - MPR)  – Gateway Building

The Stitch is a cosy hub for gaming, board games, and jigsaw puzzles – plus free hot drinks are always available for residents. It’s also the go-to spot for most food-related events. Don’t miss the JMSV Supper Club on the last Thursday of each month, hosted here by the Accommodation Team.  SafeGuarding hold some of the Switch games, just knock on their door and ask for one.

The Thread – Pavilion Building 2

Looking to get active? The Thread is designed for movement, with a ballet bar, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, and space for yoga, dance, or workouts. You’ll also find yoga mats, table tennis, beanbags, comfy seating, and a big screen for streaming fitness videos or movies.

The Weave – Pavilion Building 1

Our newly refurbished lounge is a chilled-out hangout spot with a pool table, a TV area, and plenty of cosy corners to relax with friends.

Gateway Lounges

On levels 2, 3, and 4 of the Gateway Building, you’ll find additional lounges for residents only. No booking needed – just drop in. You’re welcome to use any lounge, not just the one on your floor.

Opening Hours & Access

  • Open to all HWU students, Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm.
  • Outside these times, access is by key card for residents only. Non-residents can join if accompanied by someone who lives there, or by emailing bordershalls@hw.ac.uk.

Things to Remember (Terms & Conditions)

  • If you’re hosting an event, you’re responsible for making sure guests follow the rules. Any damage may result in charges or disciplinary action.
  • Keep noise at a reasonable level – people live above these spaces. Safeguarding may step in if noise is excessive.  If you are given an initial warning, and fail to adhere to expectations, you will be asked to leave the lounge immediately and the incident may incur financial and/ or disciplinary action.  Extreme noise disruptions or violations may result in immediate removal of certain or all persons within the lounge without warning.
  • Always leave the space as you found it: no food or drink left behind, and rubbish goes in the bins. If the lounge remains in an unsatisfactory state, we reserve the right to restrict access for a prolonged period, until those responsible, step forward, or until further instruction is given.
  • For gatherings, the organiser is responsible for ensuring all guests abide by the terms and conditions. In the event of any damage or disciplinary action, if the responsible parties cannot be identified, depending on the seriousness of the damage, the cost to repair or replace the damage will be shared with every resident in the building.
  • As a condition of using the lounge, students and guests must treat University staff and eachother with courtesy and respect, with zero tolerance to abusive behaviour.
  • Please familiarise yourself with the nearest fire exit. If the fire alarm sounds whilst you are in a lounge, you must vacate the building immediately and proceed to the nearest fire assembly point.
  • The University and University staff are not responsible for any personal property taken inside or left in the lounge during your booking.
